Saturday April 24th 2010, Away to Sully, Friendly.
First outing for the boys this season, nice welcome at Sully, we have never played this club before. A nice warm afternoon, right overlooking the Bristol Channel, the green was in very poor condition, but the game was played in great spirit. At the end we went down by 18 shots, with only Gareth Watts's rink winng, 19 to 25, it was the first game of 2010, for our new Captain, Dave Wilcox, and it was nice to see Ray Chichester back on the green after a long illness, and a good welcome for our new member Lyndon, well done to all 5 rinks. The after match hospitality was outstanding, all in all a nice day of bowling.

Wednesday April 28th 2010, Away to Grange, C.M.L.
First game in the mid week league, found us at Grange Gardens, and playing a Club that could only put out 12 players. Straight away the game changes, and all game plans go out of the window, it was quite a cold evening but we battled away and came out winners, C.M.L. first game, Splott Phoenix, first win. All rinks did there best, but there were a few changes made before the game, because of illness, out came Martyn Watts, Gerry Rose, and Tom Hinchey, and the replacements were, Tom Hooper, Dave Wilcox, and Don Wood. The two winning rinks were skipped by Colin Taylor, and Gareth Watts.

Saturday May 1st 2010, Away to Mackintosh, Friendly.
We always enjoy playing at the Mackintosh, and great friendly welcome was given to all. It was a bit of a mesh mash of game, as they only could put out three rinks to our 5, but we all had a good afternoon of bowling, but a bitter cold wind, and the threat of rain, made the afternoon not good for bowling, but a good day was had by all. A welcome plate of hot food was just right after the game.

Wednsday May 5th 2010, Away to Fairwater, C.M.L.
We all went into this match in a confident mood after winning our first game, though never cocky, we all thought that the time was right to beat a team that had beaten us so many times at there ground. Again a team that could only put out 14 players, where we had 4 reserves on the side. The only losing rink was rink 3 skipped by Tom Hopper, who had a strong rink, with Tom having a below par game they went down with a heavy defeat. Rink 1 skipped by Colin Taylor were 2 shots down with 2 ends to play when they took 9 shots over the last 2 ends to win a very close game. Gareth Watts skipping rink 3 kept a 100% win record this season, 4 games, 4 wins. Ending our second game this year in the C.M.L. with a 12 pt win, the boys were happy. Good company and a good night of bowling, was had by all.

Saturday May 8th 2010, Home to Sengenydd, W.B.A.
It was a bitter cold afternoon, when we greeted Sengenydd bowls club to Splott Park, our first home game of 2010. We new we had a battle on our hands, against a side that had been at the top of bowling in Wales for many years. The weather played a big part in the game as light rain and very strong winds continued through out, and the cold bit at your fingers. The game was played in a good atmosphere, though both sides were going for a win, we ended up with two winning rinks, and two losing, but we were beaten well overall. Father and son Martyn and Gareth Watts, skipping rinks 3 and 5 had the two winning rinks of the day with all bowlers, bowling well on the day.

Saturday May 15th, Home to Gilfach, W.B.A.
We came we played and we were well beaten, Gilfach played really well to give us a good beating, which on the day we deserved. The green was very fast for this time of the year, and being the home team the advantage should have been ours, but as we bowled bowl after bowl  we could not find the length and we were punished for it, Gilfach bowled well, on a day that we rather would like to forget, good luck to Gilfach

Wednesday, May 19th, Away to Rumney Bucc's, C.M.L.
There was only ever going to be one winner at this venue, and that was the green, to be honest you could not call this a bowling green, I'm disgusted that Rumney have to pay to play on this bit of grass. There again it was the same for both teams, we were given every opportunity to win, but the green was so heavy and wet, it turned into a throwing competition, nothing to do with bowling, and in the end we came out with a 14pt loss, nice bunch of guys, that deserve a better green to play on.

Saturday, May 22nd, Away to Cardiff Athletic, W.B.A.
Because of Cardiff City's big game at Wembly, it was a 11.00am start, and was the hottest day of the year so far. When we stepped out on the green, the temperature was 26 degrees, the green was fantastic, a bowlers dream, all the phoenix bowlers bowled well, but we were beaten by a team who played fantastic bowls through out the game, a wonderful day for bowls, we lost on all rinks, but bowls won the day, great company, good hospitality, well done Cardiff.

Wednesday, May 26th, Home to Taffs Well, C.M.L.
Last season Taffs Well were they only club to beat us in this league, the boys were up for this fixture hoping to turn the result around. It was a very close match, and for most of the game all rinks were even, with 2 rinks up, and 2 rinks down, we managed to hang on against a team who played some great bowls. We also managed to play some great bowls, and took every chance as we took the game to them, and came out with a very close 2 shot win, and 10pts.

Saturday, May 29th, Home to Fairoak, Friendly.
Last friendly game before the league starts, saw us welcome Fairoak Bowls Club, to Splott Park. Not a great afternoon for bowling, grey skies, heavy showers, and a strong wind blowing off the sea. The game was played in a great friendly way, and the banter on the green was good, but the weather put a downer on the whole afternoon. Always a good friendly game, we came second on the day, but the game was really won by the weather

Wednesday, June 2nd, Away to Roath Park C.M.L.
What a great night for bowls, the temprature was over 22 degrees, as the sun covered green played fantastic, the best green we've played on this year. The game was very close all evening, played in the way bowls should be with respect for both teams, a great game persude. With two winning rinks, Rod Thomas and Gareth Watts, we came away with a close win and 10pts, well done to all, and we look forward to the retun home game.

Saturday, June 5th, Away to Rumney M.B.L.
A great afternoon for bowls, warm, with a slight breeze, the green in good condition, our downfall that we were 2 players short. This was our first league game this year, and the first time we had been short, it was quite a shock because we were well blessed this year with the numbers of members we had, but due to bad luck we were down to 14, which is bad for both teams on match day. The game went well and at have time we were pretty even, after lunch Rink 5 skipped by Martyn Watts (Full Rink), went from 17 shots up to 2 shots down, but managed to take the last 2 ends and ended with a 20/20 draw. Gareth Watts Skipping rink 2 won by 30 shots (Only Three) and lost 25%, Rink 3 skipped by Rod Thomas won his rink (only three) but lost by 1 shot taking off the 25%, and Tom Hooper skipping rink 4, went down. We came out winners on the day, by 8 shots, but took only 9 points, on a day when we should have had more.

Wednesday, June 9th, Home to St Joseph's C.M.L.
Great evening for bowls, our green bowled very straight and there was no turn on any hands on all rinks. We had never had a win against this club, and again they played better bowls than us, the atmosphere was great and the game played with great spirit by both sides, with some good banter on the rinks. Our only winning rink was rink 2 skipped by Gareth Watts, who has played some outstanding bowls this season, along with Fred Jones, Ben Parry, and new club member Andy Spears.

Saturday, June 12th, Home to Murch, M.B.L.
A great warm sunny day for bowling, after Wednesday's defeat at home to St Joseph's all the boys were up for the game. The green played like lighting, lines were not easy to find and the game was all on lenght, we wanted to make our start in the M.B.L. good with a second win, and all rinks played well, Murch could only field 14 players but the game was played with great spirit, a great bunch of lads from Murch played a good game of bowls, it's a great pity that a great club like the Murch could not get a full team for a Saturday league game. I think every body enjoyed the afternoon, but there had to be a winner, we came out with all 14 points, winning 99 to 46.

Wednesday, June 16th, Away to Heath, C.M.L.
Very nice evening for bowls, both teams played wee, on a hot sunny June evening. Heath played some great bowls, and took all 14 points on offer, bad night for the Phoenix

Saturday, June 19th, Home to Roath Park, Friendly.
Not a very warm afternoon, a cold wind blew through Splott Park, but a good game of bowls was enjoyed by both teams. Overall we were winners on the day, but it was the game of bowls that won, great banter on and off the green, and a couple of pints after the game went down well with both clubs.

Wednesday, June 23rd, Home to Fairoak, C.M.L.
We met a very strong team that played some great bowls, on a warm June evening. The match was close all evening, seeing both teams scoring well. Terry O'Keefe skipping rink 3 had a great night of bowling, after only joing us this year, showed all the skill of playing skip for Splott Bowls Club, and guided his rink to a 24 shot to 8 win. We ended up with an overall 6 shot win and 10pts.

Saturday, June 26th, Home to Millwood, M.B.L
One of the hotest day's this year, full sun all afternoon, with not a breath of wind, and a day when Splott Phoenix were on fire. All players played to there best ability, as we took Millwood apart, there are no players to choose from, the whole club played as a team on a day when a win was a must, we came out winning by 42 shots, and 13pts, there was one drawing rink, but a winning day.

Wednesday, June 30th, Home to Grange, C.M.L.
First game to the second half of the M.B.L., saw us welcome Grange to Splott Park. This time it was Grange who were by far the better team, after winning the first game at Grange, we were under attack from the first bowls, bowled, and Grange took a good victory, taking all 14 points.

Saturday, July 3rd, Away to Cadoxton, M.B.L.
Really this was a make or break game for both sides, coming into the game we were the only two sides in the M.B.L. 6, that had won all three games. Cadoxton were on 35 points, and we were on 36 points, what a great game was played by both teams that were looking for promotion. The match scores were so close through out the game, that the game was decided on the last end, by the last rink still on the green, when Terry O'Keefe skipping rink three for the Phoenix, took 5 shots to win the game overall by 1 shot, 75 shots, to 76, a fantastic game, as we came out winners earning 10 points.

Wednesday, July 7th, Home to Fairwater, C.M.L.
Not a very nice evening for bowling, drizzle and wind played it's part in a game where we could only field 15 players. With injuries, holiday's, and shift workers, the side was depleated, and we were only able to put out a 15 man team. The boy's played really well and gave a great night of bowling, Rink 1, skipped by Gareth Watts, contained all our young bowlers, where they played some great bowling, to win by 5 shots. All rinks won on the night, coming out with all 14 points on offer, well done the Phoenix.

Saturday, July 10th, Home to Roath Park, M.B.L.
A great day for bowling as we welcomed Roath Park, this was another must win game in our run in the M.B.L. 6. The boys yet again played some outstanding bowls, against a side that we had met three times this year, it was nice to see Colin Taylor back on the green, after illness and Colin enjoying himself, back with a smile. We came out winning on three rinks, and took the game over all by over 30 shots, but most of all 12pts. The whole team played well, but players that were mentioned by there skips, who had an outstanding game were, Dicky Pearce, Andy Spires, and Joe Parry.

Wednesday, July 14th, Awat to Ely, C.M.L.
A nice night for bowls, a little bit of rain, but warm, some great competition, and banter where good bowls were played on the night. It was a great game and scores were very close on all rinks, we came out winning on three rinks, and out fourth rink lost by 1 shot on the last end, a good evening of bowling, coming out with 12points.

Saturday, July 17th, Away to Birchgrove, M.B.L.
This was always going to be a hard game for us, playing the bottom side in the division they had nothing to lose, and with us being top of the table we could lose everything. The weather was fine and warm, and at points I think we tried to hard to come out with a result, playing against a great bunch of boys the banter on the green was second to none, and the hospitality was great. At the end of the day we came out with 12 points, and won by a good margin, but those 14 points still evade us, it was a tough game, but 12 points on the board made us happy, great day of bowling

Sorry about the lack of match reports, but unfortunatley I have been ill (Web master), here is a very quick run down of match news over the past few games.

Wednesday, July 21st, up until Wednesday August 4th.
The team have played some very tough games over the last few weeks, and due to shift working, illness, and holiday's have seen a very depleted side, but the boys have pulled together well, and have come out with some great results. Wednesday July 21st saw us welcome Rumney Bucc's, the boys put up a great fight but lost the game on points, after scoring 61 shots all. On Saturday July 24th saw us welcome Llantwit Major to Splott Park in the M.B.L., after an un beaten run this year in this league the boys were looking for a great win, and did not disapoint, with a 22 shot win and 12points. Next Taffs Well in the C.M.L. away, we could only manage 14 players for this game, not good for both sides and went down by 26 shots, only winning one rink and 2 points. Saturday July 31st last but one game in the M.B.L., still with an unbeaten run the boys arrived at Penarth Bell Vue, with a great out look, the game was very hard, and scores were so close, as we played a very good side. We ended up with a close win 83 shots over 61, but with all 14pts, with one game to go in the M.B.L., and still unbeaten. Our away day Sunday to Swansea for our annual friendly saw some great company and banter, and the game was enjoyed by all, with some fantastic hospitality. Wednesday August 4th home in the C.M.L. to Roath Park, a team that we had already played 3 times this season, the boys played well but were beaten on the night by a better side.

Saturday, August 7th Home to Victoria Park, M.B.L.
Last game in our bid to win the M.B.L. 6th Division, and be promoted as champions. Victoria Park had the same chance of being promoted so the game was going to be tough. As there was so much on this game the preassure showed on both sides, not a great game to play in with so much at risk for both clubs, there were a few disputes during the game, and at one time tempers were high on both sides. There were some great bowls played by both teams, and the game was in the balance up to the last bowl played. A tough league game it was, and the game had everything for spectators, we came out with a win and a vital 10 points, but the game left a bitter taste in many of the players mouths from both sides. We finished as league champions, with a unbeaten record through out the M.B.L. 2010 season, but bowls did not win the day, and bowls can do with out these type of games

Wednesday, August 18th 2010, Home against Heath, C.M.L.
A great night of bowling, after Saturday's bad tempered game. The game was close all the way through, and the banter on the green was second to non, at the end we won on 3 Rinks and drew on the last, but a great night of bowls, left us coming out with 13 of the 14 points on offer.
