SPLOTT PHOENIX B.C. A HISTORY
The Club was founded in 1990, as Splott Conservative Club, Bowls Section. A group of members, (some who had played for other Clubs)decide to start a bowls section within the club. Splott Park was the perfect venue, being only 5 minutes walking distance from the club. The council let us share one of the two bowling greens with Splott B.C. who had bowled there for over a hundred years, the other green being used by St Alban's B.C. who were founded in 1983, and who run two sides. Within a year or two of playing only friendly fixtures, we were members of the Welsh Bowling Association, and playing in the Cardiff and District league, and the Cradiff and Municipal League, starting off in Division 6.
By 1996 we were playing in the Division 3, over the next few years we held our own, but the standard of play in the team had gone down, and members were getting restless. A number of players decided to move to private clubs, where they thought the standard of bowling would be at a better level, but forgot about the friendship of the club they had left. We also lost some players to illness, and some had sadly passed away. We seemed to be unable to attract new club members to play bowls, so at a A.G.M, the members decided to break away from Splott Conservative Club.
The club had always taken the Splott Emblem of the Phoenix for its badge, so keeping the Phoenix on our club badge, the club was renamed Splott Phoenix Bowls Club. The club now attracts new players from the local area, and further, and have a few youngsters we have brought into the sport. We went through some lean years, as new players were coached to play the game, as once again we reach for the standard we hoped to achieve. All through this time, the club has always had a great spirit, and the banter on the green has been great, as it is today. We still use Splott Conservative as our base, and with the tireless work by founder member Rod Thomas, the club has turned around, and is now playing with a great will to win again, great competitive skills, but most of all, great enjoyment. We have always treated the sport as much as a social event as a sporting one, and winning at all cost has no part in our club, but don't be fooled we are a very competitive club. We are well known in the bowling community, and are always on the look out for new members, and new friendly fxtures.
We now have 27 members, and are always promoting sport in the local comunity, there are talks of starting a womens section, lets see what happens in the future.
Founder members still playing for the club are, Rod Thomas, and Ronnie Osborne.
